{"id":3827,"date":"2026-06-05T14:57:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T12:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.meccanostampi.it\/smart-plastics-2026-a-complex-project-combining-innovation-and-collaboration\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T11:38:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T09:38:12","slug":"smart-plastics-2026-a-complex-project-combining-innovation-and-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meccanostampi.it\/en\/smart-plastics-2026-a-complex-project-combining-innovation-and-collaboration\/","title":{"rendered":"Smart Plastics 2026: a complex project, combining innovation and collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 6 and 7, Meccanostampi participated in <strong>Smart Plastics 2026<\/strong>, an event dedicated to the world of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meccanostampi.it\/en\/services\/moulding\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.meccanostampi.it\/servizi\/stampaggio\/\">technopolymers and the transformations that are taking place in the technical molding sector<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a time to discuss issues that are central to the industry today: innovation, sustainability, circularity, process reliability and the ability to manage increasingly complex production scenarios. In a market that demands high-performance solutions, definite timeframes and controlled processes, value is measured not only in the technology available, but in how different skills manage to integrate throughout the supply chain.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A discussion on the future of technical molding<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within this context, Meccanostampi brought a concrete experience gained in the field: a speech led by <strong>Roberto Menichetti together with EWIKON<\/strong>, a technological partner specialized in hot runner systems, dedicated to the development of a bi-material automotive component made in collaboration with customer <strong>Cebi Italy.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A case study that made it possible to tell, through a real project, what it means to transform a technical criticality into a stable, repeatable and industrially sustainable production process.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When complexity requires method<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project presented at Smart Plastics concerned a <strong>bi-material component intended for the automotive sector<\/strong>, made with POM and TPE for a functional application related to a car fuel door lock.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The critical issues were numerous and closely interrelated: chemical <strong>compatibility<\/strong> between materials, <strong>precision<\/strong> of functional parts, surface <strong>quality<\/strong>, <strong>positioning of<\/strong> the injection point, and the need to ensure the required surface finish following the part&#8217;s removal from the mold.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under ordinary conditions, such a component is often approached with 2-, 4- or 8-cavity molds. In this case, however, the challenge was to build a <strong>16+16-cavity mold<\/strong> capable of supporting a production capacity of about 7 million parts per year.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <em>major<\/em> technical leap that could not be handled as a simple dimensional extension of the mold. Increasing the number of cavities means multiplying the variables: injection balance, thermal stability, repeatability between impressions, movement accuracy, tolerance control, and quality continuity over time.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is in projects like this that a central principle emerges clearly: <em>complexity is not resolved at the end of the journey, but must be governed from the beginning.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Collaboration as part of the process<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roberto&#8217;s speech focused on a decisive aspect: the collaboration between customer, mold maker, and technology partner.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meccanostampi&#8217;s role, in collaboration with the client, focused on the industrialization of the component, dealt with the design and construction of the mold and process optimization. EWIKON studied the injection part, particularly with regard to the hot runner system, rheological analysis, and solutions needed to <strong>control and ensure process stability and reliability over time<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In such a project, no skill can proceed in isolation. Part geometry affects material behavior. The injection system conditions the quality of the part. The mold must dialogue with the press, automation and control systems. The end customer brings functional and production requirements that must be translated into a concrete industrial solution.      <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This logic is the same that guides Meccanostampi&#8217;s approach to product development: <strong>design and process grow together<\/strong>, through shared work that allows critical issues to be addressed before they become constraints that are difficult to correct. We explored this topic in more detail in the article on product development at Meccanostampi.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From the component to the production system<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most significant elements of the case study is the transition from component design to the construction of a real production system.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making a 16+16-cavity rotary mold did not just mean increasing productivity. It meant designing a stable balance between materials, geometries, injection, handling, and control.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Handling POM, a heat-sensitive material, and TPE, injected in very small volumes, required precise analysis of process parameters. Cavity balancing, temperature control and prevention of possible defects had to be considered as structural parts of the design.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was complemented by the integration of an in-line quality control system designed to 100% verify certain critical rubber grommet characteristics. A choice consistent with production volumes and the level of reliability required by the automotive industry.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, control was conceived not as an a posteriori verification, but as a component of the process. A continuous garrison, capable of detecting anomalies, discriminating impressions and contributing to the overall stability of production.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The themes at the heart of Smart Plastics 2026: innovation, data and reliability<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the themes that emerged during Smart Plastics 2026, <strong>innovation played a central role<\/strong>. But the case presented by Meccanostampi and EWIKON shows a very concrete idea of innovation.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Innovating does not necessarily mean introducing a technology in isolation. It means building a smarter system capable of collecting data, reading process behavior, and turning this information into <strong>operational decisions<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the project recounted at the event, this approach resulted in the use of <strong>rheological analysis, sensors, temperature control systems, and control devices<\/strong> designed to prevent critical issues and ensure production continuity.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a vision that is also close to the path of digitization and planning that Meccanostampi is pursuing in its production processes. Governing complexity requires <em>reliable data<\/em>, forecasting capabilities and tools that can link technical decisions to industrial needs.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology, then, becomes value when it is embedded in a method. When it makes it possible to reduce uncertainty, improve repeatability, make decisions faster, and build more robust processes.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An ecosystem of expertise<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project presented at Smart Plastics 2026 confirms an increasingly evident aspect in the development of technical components: the final quality does not depend on a single stage, but on the integration of all the skills involved.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Co-engineering, mold making, injection systems, simulation, validation, automation and quality control must proceed in a coordinated manner. Only then can a complex requirement be turned into reliable production, especially when volumes are high and the margin for error must be minimized.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The collaboration<\/strong> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewikon.com\/it\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.ewikon.com\/it\/\">EWIKON<\/a> has been a key element in this journey to address the challenges related to injection and process stability. Not just a technology supply, but a specialized contribution integrated into the overall development of the solution.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this sense, the case study does not only tell about a complex mold. It tells about a way of working.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A method in which the customer brings the need and expertise on the product, Meccanostampi translates it into a performing mold and reliable process, and the technology partner contributes targeted expertise on critical aspects of the system.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Smart Plastics 2026 to daily work<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participation in Smart Plastics 2026 was an opportunity to take a closer look at the directions that are transforming the industry: <em>automation, digitization, sustainability, circularity, process control, and the development of<\/em> increasingly advanced <em>materials<\/em> and applications.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it was also an opportunity to bring these issues back to their most concrete dimension: the daily work on the product, the mold and the process.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Meccanostampi, telling about this project at the fair meant sharing an experience that represents its approach well: not just building a mold, but accompanying the customer in the development of a complete manufacturing solution.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because today true innovation does not come from technology alone.
